History of Emerald Societies in America
The Emerald Society tradition in the United States began in 1953 when members of the New York City Police Department (NYPD) formed the first police emerald society. Created to celebrate Irish ancestry, foster fellowship among officers, and preserve the proud traditions of Irish Americans in law enforcement, this organization quickly became a model for similar groups across the country.
Just three years later, in 1956, members of the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) established the nation’s first Fire Emerald Society, extending the rich heritage to the fire service. Together, these organizations helped maintain the deep Irish roots that have long been woven into America’s police and fire departments, ensuring that the contributions of firefighters and law enforcement personnel are honored.
One of the most enduring traditions carried over from Ireland was the practice of honoring fallen comrades with the haunting sound of Irish bands, particularly the Great Highland bagpipes. For centuries, Celtic communities utilized these bagpipes to pay tribute to those who had passed, a heartfelt tradition that Irish immigrants brought with them to the United States. As Irish Americans ascended to leadership roles in police and fire departments, the bagpipes became a solemn and recognizable feature at line-of-duty funerals, memorial services, and ceremonies dedicated to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
To preserve this tradition, the NYPD Emerald Society formed the first police pipe band in 1960, followed by the FDNY Emerald Society Pipe Band in 1962. Their example inspired departments across North America to establish their own Emerald Societies and Pipes & Drums units, ensuring that the music, customs, and spirit of the Irish first responder community continue for future generations.
