Who We Are
The Colorado Emerald Society proudly embodies a rich tradition rooted in Irish heritage, community connection, and public service. Based in Denver, our fraternal and cultural organization consists of dedicated active and retired law enforcement officers, firefighters, military personnel, and public servants who bond over their Irish ancestry and pride.
Our mission is to honor the significant contributions of Irish Americans in public safety, celebrate our Irish ancestry, preserve and promote Irish culture, and support charitable initiatives throughout Colorado. Through various events, outreach, and partnerships, we aim to strengthen the connections between heritage and service while giving back to the communities we serve each day.

History of Emerald Societies in America
The Emerald Society tradition in the United States began in 1953 when members of the New York City Police Department (NYPD) formed the first police emerald society. Established to celebrate Irish ancestry, foster fellowship among law enforcement officers, and preserve the proud traditions of Irish Americans in this field, the organization quickly served as a model for similar groups across the country.
Just three years later, in 1956, members of the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) launched the nation’s first Fire Emerald Society, extending this rich Irish heritage to the firefighting community. Together, these organizations have played a crucial role in sustaining the deep Irish roots interwoven into America’s police and fire departments, ensuring that the contributions of firefighters and law enforcement personnel are recognized and honored.
One of the enduring traditions carried over from Ireland is the practice of honoring fallen comrades with the evocative sound of Irish bands, particularly the Great Highland bagpipes. For centuries, Celtic communities have used these bagpipes to pay tribute to those who have passed, a heartfelt tradition that Irish immigrants brought to the United States. As Irish Americans rose to leadership roles within police and fire departments, the bagpipes became a solemn and recognizable element at line-of-duty funerals, memorial services, and ceremonies for those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
To preserve this tradition, the NYPD Emerald Society established the first police pipe band in 1960, followed closely by the formation of the FDNY Emerald Society Pipe Band in 1962. Their efforts inspired departments across North America to create their own Emerald Societies and Pipes & Drums units, ensuring that the music, customs, and spirit of the Irish first responder community thrive for future generations.
